The urge to splurge

Eat dinner at work. It sounds so easy… but why does it end challenging?

My office is in a busy city in Asia. It’s a small office but they offer a free meal every day in a small kitchen. I pass it up quite frequently. That’s something I’ve been meaning to stop doing.

When I do my budget, the daily food expenses stick out. As a category, food is one of my biggest expenses and getting over eating the free food would cut my expenses. Actually, it might cut close to the amount that I’m paying for an online graduate degree. The incentive really is there.

It’s certainly not “hard” to simply eat at work. Saving the world or doing rocket science this problem is not.

I do have a slight aversion because I hated the food the first day and it can be a little bland at times. The eating area is very compact, too. It would be better if we had a big cafeteria with choices and I could be more anonymous about it.

Those are the big reasons why I tend to walk somewhere and shell out some cash for a quiet meal. That should be a treat, though, and not an everyday occurrence.

I want to cut down to at least half of what I’m spending now on work lunch or dinner. That would save me over $1,200/year and probably be a bit healthier, too. Something for me to think about.

I’ll update in a few weeks on how I’ve done.
