It’s a question that people always seem to be asking. Hate to say it but, admittedly, I have been failing to wake up at my desired time. That means it is time for some changes.
Ideally, I want to get up near 7am. My shift ends a bit later than average and this means I could never be one of those 4am risers. How envious I am of people who can sleep at 9-10pm and wake up so early to jumpstart their day… at 9pm, though, I’m still at work.
When it comes to health, wealth and education, an early wake up is a key piece of the puzzle. Getting more done in the morning is pivotal to being successful. The morning is when we have the most energy and are the most focused. Gradually, the day tends to wear me down and by the end, I’m ready to play some computer games and lounge about.
It helps to be clear about what we want to accomplish in the morning. I workout for about 2 hours and then I study for 1-2 hours depending on the remaining time. After that, I put myself together for work and head off. That means 3-4 hours of work before work.
However, lately I’ve been getting up an hour and a half later than I’d like to be. This cuts back my time and puts me into crunch as works draws closer. What’s worse is I find myself getting caught in time suck activities that steal 10-20 minutes here and there. Here’s my plan going forward:
- Jump out of bed. Maybe it seems silly but I think it’s the most important thing. I love the news and I love instagram. Both of those things can easily suck me in for 10-20 minutes in the morning and put me behind. Jumping out of bed is down to willpower and I can do this.
- Get out the door fast. Lucky for me the gym is real close to my home and if I can get out the door faster, I’ll be there quicker. I’ve found that for myself, I don’t have a problem getting things rolling once I’m at the gym.
- Stop setting multiple alarms. This one is a bit more of a thinker and it might take some getting used to. However, the more I think about it, multiple alarms sets your day up for failure and should only be used to ensure you don’t miss something important. It’s time to trust myself to wake up.
I know I can do these things. They’re simple and they may make a big change. I’ll update in the future how they fared.
